- Ground balance has to be set on-site, not at home — mineral content changes from field to field, sometimes even across one large site.
- More sensitivity is not automatically better. Push it up until the detector starts chattering, then back off one notch and leave it there.
- Keep the coil low, level, and slow — roughly 2 to 3 seconds per sweep with generous overlap. Speed is the single biggest reason targets get missed.
- A stable, direction-consistent tone is usually a real non-ferrous target; an erratic tone that changes with the coil's angle is usually elongated iron trash.
- Dig a clean plug and re-scan it rather than tearing up the ground blindly — it recovers targets faster and doesn't wreck what you just found.
Hand two people the exact same detector and send them to the same field, and it's common for one to come back with a pocketful of finds and the other with almost nothing. The machine isn't the variable — setup and technique are. Most of what separates a productive day from a wasted one comes down to a handful of settings and habits that nobody explains clearly enough before you head out.
Before You Leave the House
Good setup starts before you've even reached the search site. A rushed five minutes at home saves an hour of troubleshooting in the field.
- Battery charge: A low battery quietly reduces sensitivity and distorts signal strength long before the detector actually shuts off — charge fully, don't just top up.
- Coil and cable check: Inspect the coil cable for nicks or loose connections; a damaged cable causes exactly the kind of erratic false signals people blame on 'bad ground' instead.
- Known-target test: Sweep the detector over a coin or piece of jewellery you own before you leave, just to confirm it's responding normally.
Ground Balance Has to Happen On-Site
Ground balance is the setting that tells your detector to ignore the natural mineral signal coming from the soil itself, so it can isolate the much weaker signal coming from an actual target. Factory presets are tuned for average conditions and rarely match your location — and soil composition can shift meaningfully within the same search area, not just between different sites.
- Find a clean patch with no visible metal nearby to run the balance on.
- Lower the coil toward the ground and raise/lower it slowly while adjusting, whether you're doing this manually or letting an automatic system track it.
- Keep adjusting until the background threshold hum stays flat and stable rather than rising and falling.
- Re-run this any time the ground itself changes — moving from dry topsoil into a damp gully, for instance, or crossing into rockier ground.
Sensitivity: Find the Edge, Then Back Off
The most common beginner mistake is maxing out sensitivity on the assumption that higher always means better. In mineralized or 'noisy' ground, sensitivity that's too high floods the detector with false chatter and actually makes real targets harder to isolate, not easier.
- Start near the middle: of the sensitivity range as your baseline for a new site.
- Raise it gradually until the detector starts chattering or giving unstable signals with the coil held still over clean ground, then drop back one level.
- In heavily mineralized ground, a stable setting at moderate sensitivity consistently outperforms an unstable one pushed to maximum.
Sweep Technique That Doesn't Cost You Targets
How the coil moves through the air matters as much as any setting on the display. Most missed targets aren't missed because the detector couldn't reach them — they're missed because the coil passed over too fast or unevenly to register a clean signal.
- Coil height: Keep it 2–5 cm above the ground, moving in a straight, level plane. Lifting it at the end of each swing — a very common habit — clips the read on anything near the edge of your pass.
- Sweep pace: Aim for roughly 2–3 seconds per full sweep. Faster than that and the detector doesn't have time to fully process deeper or smaller targets, so they get skipped rather than flagged.
- Overlap: Overlap each pass by around half the coil's width. Coil sensitivity is actually a little stronger toward the edges than dead centre, so generous overlap catches targets a tighter pattern would miss.
- Coverage pattern: For a promising patch, sweep it once in one direction and again perpendicular to the first pass — a genuine target usually shows up on both passes; a stray reflection or interference often doesn't.
Reading What the Detector Is Actually Telling You
Interpreting tones and readouts is a skill that mostly comes from time in the field, but a few patterns hold consistently enough to be worth learning early.
- Stable, repeatable tone: A tone that stays consistent no matter which direction you sweep from is the signature of a good, rounded target — gold, copper, and silver typically behave this way.
- Direction-dependent tone: A signal that changes character depending on the angle you approach from usually means elongated ferrous trash — nails, wire, scrap.
- VDI readout: On machines with a numeric Visual Discrimination Index, low numbers generally cluster around iron, the mid-range around aluminium and copper, and the high end around silver and larger gold pieces — but treat this as a guide, not a guarantee.
- Raw gold is the exception: Small, unrefined gold pieces are irregularly shaped and don't conduct as cleanly as refined metal, so they can read low — sometimes similar to iron — on the VDI scale. In ground with a genuine history of gold, don't dismiss a weak or ambiguous signal without checking it.
Recovering a Target Without Wrecking It
Digging blind or carelessly is how good finds get scratched, bent, or lost in loose soil. A little discipline at the recovery stage pays off.
- Pinpoint the centre of the signal by sweeping the coil in a narrowing cross pattern and noting where the tone peaks from every direction.
- Cut a clean circular plug around that point rather than digging a wide hole, and lift it out as one piece.
- Sweep the empty hole and the removed plug separately — whichever one still gives a signal is where the target actually is.
- Use a handheld pinpointer to narrow the search inside the plug rather than crumbling the whole thing apart by hand.
Mistakes That Quietly Cost You Finds
- Ignoring faint signals: Deeper targets naturally produce weaker signals — a habit of only digging strong ones means walking past exactly the finds worth the most.
- Skipping re-balancing: If the ground noticeably changes underfoot mid-search, rebalance immediately rather than pushing through with a stale setting.
- Metal on yourself: Buckles, zips, and boot eyelets close to the coil cause false signals that get misread as ground interference — keep loose metal off your search-side hand and leg.
- Neglected maintenance: Clean the coil after every outing and check the cable and connector regularly; a slowly failing connection produces symptoms that look exactly like bad ground until you've wasted a day chasing them.
